Abstract
This paper analyzes the challenges and opportunities that arise for critical thinking education in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly with the emergence of deep-learning AI systems and large language models (LLMs). While deep-learning AI produces highly accurate outputs without offering transparent justifications, LLMs can communicate in natural language and provide human-interpretable explanations. This development raises concerns about whether the core cognitive skills of critical thinking still require intensive training when AI can perform them more efficiently than the average human. However, this study argues that critical thinking remains an essential and non-delegable human capacity that guides and supervises various cognitive agents, including AI. In the AI era, dispositional aspects of critical thinking become even more crucial than skill-based training alone. The paper also examines the potential of LLM-based conversational AI as a tool for fostering discursive forms of critical thinking, while acknowledging its limitations. Ultimately, the study contends that critical thinking education must preserve its traditional focus on cognitive skills, strengthen the cultivation of critical dispositions, and incorporate AI in a limited manner that does not encourage excessive cognitive offloading.
