Abstract
The main purposes of the present study were to investigate what kind of a school type or gender served a more positive science classroom environment to male and female high school students. Further, the study was also intended to search for the way to improve science classroom environment. A group of 358 second-year students who study math-science course were assigned to take part in this study. The school type was classified into a science high school, a coeducation and a single sex school. Two standardized instruments namely the Classroom Environment Scale(CES) and the Individualized Classroom Environment Questionnaire(ICEQ) have been employed to collect data. The study found, first, a science high school students experienced a more positive science classroom environment than a coeducation or a single sex school students. Second, the study found that female students experienced more positive science classroom environment than male students in a whole classroom environment of class variables. The study also found that male students experienced a more positive science classroom environment than female students in a individualized classroom environment of class variables. Finally, the study found that interaction effects based on school type and gender was founded in a whole classroom environment of class variables, a task orientation of a whole classroom environment, a personalization of a individualized classroom environment, and fellow students' opinion of mentality variables.
