Abstract
This study aims to foster and stimulate discussions on research methods in the digital context by presenting the essential methodological principles required to investigate everyday experiences of digital media using ethnographic methods. The article examines the process of knowledge production and the approach of text analysis in ethnographic research on digital media experiences, focusing on the work of eight highly acclaimed researchers in the field. From their work, important principles are derived, serving as guidelines for conducting ethnographic research in the realm of digital media experiences. The study discusses several principles of ethnographic research methods, including “multiplicity”, “non-digital centricness”, “openness”, “reflecxivity”, and “flexibility.” These principles take on new significance and potential within the digital context, as they reveal distinct characteristics when applied to the study of everyday experiences with digital media. While these principles provide guidance for ethnographic research, they can be adjusted based on the subject, context, and circumstances encountered during field research. However, these principles should be clearly outlined in the digital ethnography. By doing so, researchers enable others to independently contemplate the process of knowledge production and its meaning, facilitating the emergence of alternative explanations and interpretations.
