초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the changes elementary schoolstudents' interests in life science instruction. The promotion of interest and curiosity towards objectsand phenomena of nature is one of the most important goals of science education. However, as thestudents advance in grade levels their interests in science seem to decline and studies on this matterare mostly too deductive and broad. This study used a mixed methodology to extract the factorsinvolved in the students' interests. The students' interests in school science were changed bothquantitatively and in qualitatively after instruction, and these changes were caused by many factors. Students' interests during and after science instruction were enhanced especially if the curriculumand the students' interests before instruction were matched. Through in-depth interviews, it wasfound that 9 kinds of factors, which were categorized into two groups of external and internal, influenced changes of students' interests. In conclusion, factors that affect students' interests do notact independently, but interact each other, while having different impacts on individuals.
