Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out and analyze the ‘kenosis’ that Bellow is realizing through the main character in Saul Bellow’s Herzog. Herzog recalls his life through self-examination in the sudden chaos of it. In this process, he experiences the paradox of thinking and tries to search for his real life and its source through ‘kenosis’. This study analyzes its process with the way of biblical interpretation. Herzog is an intellectual and a professor who teaches students. When he is informed of the divorce by his wife, he is traumatized and confused and looks back on his past. He expresses his spirit with unreceived writing. In the process of self-examination on his painful past, he feels the limitations of knowledge that cannot solve his problems, and he confirms reality. He stops writing, realizing ‘kenosis’ in a state of self-abandonment. This brings him to life and the process of restoring life. Bellow is secretly expressing his religious outlook. Therefore, biblical verses are included in his novel. In this study, the biblical concept of ‘kenosis’ was used to analyze Herzog’s life. A further study will examine the broader meaning of “kenosis” in Bellow’s novel.
