Abstract

This paper examines the conditions of just memory of the war as an ethical way to heal the wounds that exist in the countries participating in the Vietnam War and presents a task to practice them. To this end, this research introduces the composition and management of national and private cemeteries in Ho Chi Minh City as an example of the Vietnam War, and studies and criticizes fair conditions to overcome each country’s egotistical memory methods based on Vietnamese-American writer Vietan Nguyen’s non-fiction, Nothing Ever Dies. Cemeteries related to the Vietnam War have been influenced by changes in the political and social environment in their creation and operation, and although each managing country understands the past with self-centered thinking, Nguyen argues that it can alleviate the memory of inhumanity that occurred during the war that they consider the other country’s situation and perspective in addition. The countries such as Cambodia, Laos, and Korea, not to mention Vietnam and the United States, that experienced great loss of life in connection with the Vietnam War, are operating cemeteries from their own perspective, causing silent discord. However, they must devise a way of remembering the perpetrators and victims of war so that they can practice true reconciliation and co-prosperity.
