Abstract

This paper examines the war memory and cultural politics of Vietnamese Americans as “the Vietnam war refugees,” mainly through the works of Viet Thanh Nguyen. The so-called “75ers” – a term used to designate the majority of the Vietnamese Americans – have been called both the victims and losers of the war, as well as “the betrayers of the nation” or “the puppets of the American imperialists.” The works of Viet Thanh Nguyen are considered a useful resource to trace the changes in the cultural politics of Vietnamese Americans in relation to the Vietnam war memory and to establish a “‘just memory of the war.” First, this paper examines the life and memory-scape of the Vietnamese Americans through the life history of Viet Thanh Nguyen and his family. Second, it discusses the overdetermined identities attributed to Vietnamese Americans, both as war-involved refugees and as sympathizers with the war. Finally, it seeks to understand the cultural politics of the Vietnamese Americans in the era of the Post-Cold War, which rapidly changed the new horizons of political possibilities. To sum up, this paper suggests that establishing and practicing the ethics of “just memory” is necessary to overcome the dichotomy between perpetrator-hood and victim-hood and to break though the self-centered ethics of memory, which originated from the war-refugee life and memory of the war influenced by the order of the Cold War.
