Abstract

'Seoyea' and Calligraphy are both a field of art which focuses on the decoration and artistic expression of characters/letters, which was developed into a legitimate art form in both the East and West by the 20thCentury. In the current era, even traditional caligraphy is being influenced by the Western modernism and post-modernism. This can be understood that a trend of avant-garde and post-classicism is dominating the art of writing. Therefore, at this point, it is reasonable to distiguish the genres of ‘character art’ into traditional Seoyea, modern Seoyea, and design Seoyea. If we can expand our perspectives on the field of calligraphy, we can also confirm the fact that the art of calligraphy can be used to create new cultural contents which can fit the current cultural trends in many areas such as arts (i.e. movie, drama, dancing, performance arts, drawing, etc.), liberal arts (lectures), and even marketing. Therefore, this is a time where we should accept the new change and foster a new wave of calligraphy experts who can actively respond to the rapidly changing cultural landscape while preserving the artistic roots of traditional calligraphy at the same time.
