Abstract

This essay examines why Haegong Sin Ik Hi made a break with President Rhee Syung Man and what his political goal was in that times, and analyzes his political activities and course after the establishment of South Korean government. This themes will be approached around the following three points. The first point is the relationship between Sin Ik Hi and the key figures in Provisional Government. In the time of establishment of a government, Sin Ik Hi strenuously insisted that the establishment of South Korean government must precede the reunification of North and South, whereas the key figures in Provisional Government asserted that the north and south negotiation must be promoted for forming unified government. Preceding researches payed attention to their division. But their division was not long. This research takes notice of their reunion after the establishment of South Korean government to complete the independence. The second is the relationship between Sin Ik Hi and President Rhee Syung Man. They holded hands for the establishment of South Korean government, but in a short time they separated. The reason was that they showed a difference of opinion about how they would like to set of relation with the key figures in Provisional Government, and how much the liberal democracy was valuable. Sin Ik Hi suggested to open the offices to the key figures in Provisional Government, but President Rhee refused. Sin Ik Hi thought that the anticommunism must come true by realizing the liberal democracy, while President Rhee thought that the liberal democracy could be limited for the anticommunism. The third is the relationship between Sin Ik Hi and the Democratic Party. He is a leader of the progressive group in the party. He insisted to bind together with the renovation power, typified by Jo Bong Am, to overcome the Democratic Party´s conservatism and expand it's territory, unlike the conservatives. He hoped that the Democratic Party would become truly the united party of all the political powers that tried to realize democracy.
