Abstract

This study sought the historical understanding and approach direction of Gaya-related records shown in 『Samgukyusa』. 『Samgukyusa』 recognized Gaya as being composed of several independent political bodies. Il-yeon wrote 'Garakgukgi' to summarize the currently undisclosed 『(original) Garakgukgi』, which is meaningful in that it expanded and supplemented the scope and system of recognizing ancient history centered on the three kingdoms to Gaya history. The title of ‘Garakgukgi’ is the name of the book, unlike other items in the 「Giyi」 section, which mostly use country names, and this is presumed to have originated from the limitations of related records that could be secured at the time of compilation. The storyline of the founding myth conveyed in the 'Garakgukgi' tells the origin and identity of Garakguk and reflects the certain historicity of the founding process. As various transmitions were added over a long period of time, the myth of the founding of a nation was gradually conveyed embellished with later ideas. The story of how Su-ro make give in to Tal-hae through magic and the story of his marriage to a princess from Ayuta were combined with the legend of Su-ro to enhance the power and authority of the founder's king and highlight his divinity. In addition, the transmission of 9 chiefs, who were the power of ship owners before the appearance of King Su-ro, and the founding myths of the remaining 5 Gaya are intertwined. The founding myth of Su-Ro later borrowed the authority of an ancient Chinese legend in connection with Confucian culture, and the transmission related to Queen Heo bring on the authority of Buddhism and sought the idea of deification. The ‘5 Gaya’ section conveys both the ‘Chan’ of 『Garakgi』 and 『Bonjosaryak』, which are the original records that the various political bodies constituting Gaya recognized as five or six differently. It is highly likely that the 'Chan' in 『Garakgi』 is 'Myeong' in the 'Garakgukgi' section, and 『Bonjosaryak』 is 『Saryak』 compiled by Lee Jae-heon. ‘Myeong’, written by Jigeumjusa Kim Yang-il, may have been written for the purpose of personally congratulating King Su-ro on the founding of the country. Afterwards, Geumgwanjijusa Writer compiled 『(original) Garakgukgi』 and added the history after King Su-ro to the contents of ‘Myeong’, and Il-yeon seems to have written ‘Garakgukgi’ to summarize it. ‘Gaehwangryeok’ is the only cited entry in the ‘Garakgukgi’, is presumed to be a historical book of Garakguk compiled by a direct descendant of King Su-ro during the founding of Goryeo Dynasty. In the 『Gaehwangryeok』, it is said that Silla merged Garakguk in the 19th year of King Beopheung, after which Il-yeon added the fact that Garakguk was destroyed in the 23rd year of King Jinheung of Silla in 'Garakgukgi'. It is understood that this originates from 『(original) Garakgukgi』, which intentionally quoted the time of the fall of Daegaya by the royal family of Garak, who was reluctant to voluntarily merge Garakguk with Silla. The transmission of Queen Heo, who arrived from the country of Ayuta in the western region in the ‘Garakgukgi’, conveys the image of being deified with Buddhist faith more distinctly than the transmission of Su-ro. The record of Pasa Stone Pagoda brought by Heo Hwang-ok from Ayuta in the section of ‘Geumgwanseong Pasa Stone Pagoda’ was added to the founding myth of Garakguk in later as a result of the Buddhist embellishment process of 『Samgukyusa』. In addition, the record of King Su-ro of 'Garaguk' intervening in a Buddhist tale highlighting the efficacy of Buddhism by edifying the female demons of Mount Maneo in the ‘Eosanbulyeong’ can be understood in the same context. It is presumed that these materials reflected the contents of '『Gogi』', which was compiled by the association of Garakguk and Buddhism after the introduction of Buddhism, in the compilation of 'Garakgukgi'. Through this, it is possible to imagine a situation in which a new perception of Gaya embellished with Buddhism is spreading in the outskirts of Gimhae.
