Unstable Livelihood, Irregular Migration and Human Security of Khmer People in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam

For last decade, labour migration has become a prominent phenomenon among the Khmer in Vietnam. Based on the study of the Khmer in Tra Vinh province of Vietnam, this paper asserts that with specific cultural traditions, economic conditions and in spite of various available governmental supports, this ethnic community has experienced unstable livelihoods. As a solution, the Khmer people migrated spontaneously to other industrial and economic cities and provinces for subsistence. Although the migration, to some extent, has helped improve the Khmer’ economic conditions, it also challenged human security of the Khmer people, including working conditions, cultural practice, health care, education, and the future of their next generations.
Abstract
