Abstract

This study analyzes the religious, social, and natural elements in Victor Hugo’s The Toilers of the Sea, examining how these dimensions interact with the formation of the protagonist Gilliatt and the progression of the narrative. First, on the religious level, Gilliatt is detached from institutional religion, yet he approaches the essence of faith through suffering and self-sacrifice. Hugo emphasizes a religiosity grounded not in belief or doc- trine, but in ethical action born of pain. Second, from a social perspective, Gilliatt is a figure of complete marginalization. However, this isolation leads him to discover an inner ethical foundation, enabling him to volun- tarily take on responsibility for others. This reveals how morality can emerge on an existential plane, independent of institutional frameworks. Third, nature is not a passive backdrop but an active subject. Gilliatt’s struggle with the sea becomes a confrontation with Anankē, the necessity and limits of human existence. Nature appears both as a force to be re- sisted and as a transcendent Other. Through this analysis, the paper argues that Hugo, in The Toilers of the Sea, offers an integrated reflection on hu- man existence, encompassing suffering, sacrifice, salvation, and ethics.
