Abstract

Lines drawn with five different black gel pen inks on paper were analyzed via GC/MS to identify additives unique to each ink type and to determine the age of the ink lines on paper. The extracting solvent for the black gel pen inks and the compositional changes of the black gel pen inks were investigated. Methanol was found to be the best extracting solvent and sixteen additive components were identified based on the number of observed peaks and changes in the peak area in the GC/MS chromatograms. After statistical analysis of their components, the black gel pen inks made in South Korea and Japan belonged to the same group and could not be distinguished from each other. However, black gel pen inks made in Germany contained six distinguishable compounds (5, 6, 11 and 14-16) which belonged to a different group. The amounts of six compounds (1-6) decreased rapidly especially from month 0 to the 7th month and then decreased slower down to the 48th month. Also determined from the study of the defragmentation pattern of mass spectroscopy with additives, the timedependent changing of additives and the identification of remaining compounds could be performed.
