Abstract
As evidence of scientific investigation, fibers have been used to link their relevance in incidents or accidents, but most of the cross-sectioning methods known for fiber comparisons are difficult to apply for a very short length of fiber. Through this study, we have established two cross-sectioning methods to overcome this drawback. The first method is a hand technique in which a fiber is placed between polyethylene films, fixed with heat, set up vertically using a vise, and cut thinly while viewing the edge of the fiber under a low power stereomicroscope. The other is a microtome method in which a polyethylene film fixed with a fiber is placed on a tissue cassette set, and then a wax solution is added to coagulate and then cut. In these two methods, a short fiber can be used as a long one by fixing the fiber to the polyethylene films. In the hand technique, it is possible to obtain a thin cross-sectioning fiber reproducibly by cutting the fiber while viewing the end section of the fiber. Microtome method is able to make a fiber cross section with a very short fiber which is difficult to apply by the conventional method.
