The study was aimed to reveal the charac- teristics of dimensions underlying emotional and cognitive interest in animals and plants in elementary school students by sex and school years. Self-ratings to 18 animals and 12 plants were analyzed by using maximum likelihood method with VARIMAX rotation. The results showed that emotional interest in animals and plants revealed two dimensions, fa- vorable organisms (mammals and plants with colorful flowers) and unfavorable organisms (invertebrates and plants with scary names and structures), regardless of sex and school years. Boys and girls’s cognitive interest in animals revealed two dimen- sions like those in emotional interest. Pet animals emerged as a new factor in 6th graders’ cognitive interest in animals. Boys’ cognitive interest in plants presented two dimensions, while girls’ revealed single dimensions. Sixth graders, relative to 4th, showed more dimensions of cognitive interest in plants. These results suggest that as for elementary school students, there are at least 2 dimensions of emotional inte- rest in animals and plants, while the dimensions of cognitive interest may depend on sex and age.
