Abstract
Currently Europe is facing the following two critical security challenges simultaneously: 1) worsening politico-military disputes with Russia, represented by the ongoing Ukraine War; and 2) discord with the United States (U.S.) over traditional alliance commitment since the return of Trump Administration. These circumstances are leading European countries to take more active measures on bolstering defense autonomy. This includes the possible establishment and extension of indigenous regional nuclear deterrence at Europe; led by Britain and France. Although Europe’s own nuclear deterrent may not be enough to replace the nuclear umbrella by the U.S., it will enable European countries to credibly deny and offset Russia’s attempt of nuclear coercion at crisis or limited armed conflicts in the region.
