Abstract
This study aimed to classify the types of stress among the ROK Army officers and NCOs, and to examine their associations with suicidal behaviors and depression. Data were collected from 500 military officials, who responded to a self-rated questionnaire. Factor analyses using exploratory structural equation modeling supported the superiority of the six-factor model consisting of task, organizational culture, work environment, interpersonal relationship, familial affairs, and personal matters. Next, hierarchical analyses were conducted to ascertain the unique impacts of subtypes of military stress, after controlling the effects of demographics and protective factors, gratitude and social support. The results showed that interpersonal relationship stress had unique impacts on suicidal behaviors and depression among junior military officials. Among senior military officials, however, task stress and interpersonal relationship stress were found to be independently associated with depression. These findings indicate that the impacts of subtypes of military stress can vary depending on military position, and counseling interventions for military officials should be more focused on mitigating interpersonal relationship stress.
