Abstract

How to teach cultural awareness using digital films and dramas Yang, Miran Full time lecturer / Dong-ah Broadcasting College Recent technology advances have made tremendous changes in film industry and broadcasting. Films, dramas, and sitcoms are downloaded anytime and anywhere and almost all resources in internet are accessible to anyone. This dramatic change has influenced on language classrooms and using multi-media has become a norm in language teaching. Since the goal of language learning is to acquire communicative competence and it cannot be achieved without the sense of socio-cultural, socio-pragmatic use of the target language, cultural awareness is considered as a critical part of language learning. However, instructing cultural awareness is often frustrating for language teachers due to lack of authentic materials. In this sense, digital films and dramas are perfect materials because they contain everyday life, diverse human relationships, and different emotional state of ours. In addition to that, the materials can be easily manipulated, handled or edited by teachers and learners according to their needs. These newly developed materials enable students not only to aware cultural difference, but also to acquire socially, culturally appropriate communicative competence. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to present the methods for teaching cultural awareness using digital films and programs and to suggest the better way of using those materials.
