Abstract
Estimating the postmortem interval (PMI) of a decomposed corpse is an essential step in a forensic investigation. In this study, we evaluated the accuracy and practicality of various methods for estimating PMI, including insect morphology identification, DNA barcoding for species identification, and Total body score(TBS) for decomposition stages. To apply these methods, we analyzed 26 cases of decomposition that occurred in Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea, between 2019 and 2020. The analysis included dividing the body into three parts, assigning scores based on the degree of decomposition, and calculating the TBS score. We also used regression equations for each body part and estimated the minimum PMI by retroactively calculating the Accumulated degree days (ADD) from the decomposition process. Our results confirmed that the combination of these methods provides an effective means of estimating PMI in real forensic settings. This study emphasizes the usefulness of these methods in forensic investigations to determine the time of death accurately and reliably.
