Abstract

A Study of Aspect Ratios for Moviemaking Kim, Jung Sub Concurrent Professor / Dep. of Theater & Film, Dankook University One of the important things for film making is deciding what aspect ratio you choose. There are so many aspect ratios in film business since film has developed. The compositional area that a cinematographer frames in the camera viewfinder is not always the same area that is projected on the motion picture screen or is scanned on the television system. Motion Picture films are not always projected or televised in their original width or format. The may be blown-up or reduced to a larger or smaller film width for various reasons or uses, or they might be scanned on a telecine for television with a different aspect ratio. This fact would place directors in a compromising position. First, this research shows the historical and technical meaning of several aspect ratios that are widely influenced on film industry. And second, subjects of aspect ratio that could occur during film transferring are discussed.
