초록

In the 20th century, the world got changed by art reforms and revolutionary scientific development. The two World Wars brought about the new art genres such as Dadaism, Futurism and Expressionism. They were artistic reactions against traditions which caused the tragedies. Among them, the “performance" had been showing an outstanding development. The “performance” denied all the traditions which might restrict artistic imagination and therefore allowed perfect freedom in expression forms. That is why various scientific techniques that didn't seem to go with artistic performances were frequently used. Reflecting its historical background, modern art including the “performance", develops together with the “digital", the numerical information. In this digital era, the time and the space are expanded to virtual reality in which artistic activities are being performed without any distinction of regions, societies, economic backgrounds and so on. It is true that the “performances" have been producing many controversial issues in art society. On the other hand, however, it is also true that many “performances" give meaningful impacts to the world of art and strong impression to the public. Recently, the “Media Performance" has been trying to retain the tradition of “experimental art" and to seize the public's interest. No one can be sure where rapidly changing environments and revolutionary scientific developments may shift the trend of the art. However, we can be quite sure that the era that boundaries were drawn comes to an end, as does the era that the old traditions were followed without hesitation. Breaking down walls against scientific techniques, the modern art tries to remove even the boundaries of spaces and times, which is being realized with assistance of high technologies such as virtual reality, networks, artificial intelligence and nano-technology.
