출소자 사회통합 보호요인에 관한내러티브 탐구

초록

이 연구는 출소자들의 사회통합을 돕는 보호요인들을 탐색하는데 목적을 두었다. 보호요인(protective factor)은 출소자들이 준법시민으로 지역사회에 정착하는데 결정적인 역할을 하는 요인들을 의미한다. 내러티브 탐구를 적용하여 출소 후 사회정착에 성공한 남녀 출소자 두 사람을 연구 참여자로 선정하고 그들이 살아 온 생애를 과정 중심적으로 이해하였다. 연구 참여자들은 자신들의 삶의 경험들을 자유롭고 진솔하게 이야기하고, 스스로 평가하며 의미를 부여하였다. 연구자는 이를 연구목적에 맞게 구조화 및 재구조하는 분석과정을 거쳤다. 연구 참여자들의 생애 전반을 연구범위로 하였으나, 출소 후의 경험들에 비중을 두고 범죄자의 삶에서 벗어나 지역사회 구성원으로 통합되는데 작용한 요인들을 탐색하였다. 내러티브 탐구결과 출소자의 사회통합 보호요인들은 종교, 가족, 공동체 소속감, 멘토, 긍정적 정체성, 의미있는 활동들, 직업의 안정성, 주거의 안정성인 것으로 분석되었다. 이를 내ㆍ외적 요인으로 분류하면 가족, 멘토, 직업 및 주거의 안정성과 같은 외적인 요인들, 그리고 종교, 공동체 소속감, 긍정적 정체성, 의미있는 활동들과 같은 내적인 요인들이 동일한 비중으로 드러났다. 출소자들의 사회통합은 내적인 변화와 외적ㆍ물리적 조건들이 결합될 때 가능하다는 것을 시사한다. 연구결과가 함의하는 바에 입각하여, 그동안 간과되어왔던 출소자의 내적인 변화에 관한 이슈와 출소자 지원제도 강화를 중심으로 출소자의 성공적 사회통합 방안을 제안하였다.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore protective factors that help the reintegration of ex-prisoners into the community. Protective factors refer to factors that play a critical role in helping ex-prisoners settle down in the community as law-abiding citizens. By applying narrative inquiry, two male and female ex-prisoners who succeeded in settling into society after release were selected as research participants, and their lives were studied in a process-oriented manner. Research participants spoke freely and honestly about their life experiences, then evaluated and gave meaning to them. The researcher underwent an analysis process to structure and restructure the submitted results to suit the research purpose. Although the overall life experience of the research participants was the scope of the study, emphasis was placed on their experiences after release from prison, the factors that contributed to their desistance from crime, and their integration into community members. Results of the narrative inquiry showed that the protective factors for social integration of ex-prisoners were religion, family, sense of belonging to a community, mentor, positive identity, meaningful activities, employment, and housing stability. When classifying these into internal and external factors, external factors such as family, mentor, job, and residential stability, and internal factors such as religion, sense of community belonging, positive identity, and meaningful activities were revealed with equal weight. This suggests that ex-prisoners' reintegration into the community is possible when internal changes are combined with external and physical conditions. Based on the implications of the research results, this study proposed a plan for the successful social integration of released prisoners, focusing on issues related to the internal changes of the persons that have been overlooked and strengthening the support system for released prisoners.
