Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of drug addicts’ gender and perceived risk on the level of blame attributed to them. A total of 174 university students (84 males, 90 females) were randomly assigned to scenarios involving either a male or female drug addict and asked to evaluate blame and perceived risk. Results revealed that male addicts were blamed more and perceived as more dangerous than female addicts. Moreover, perceived risk mediated the relationship between gender and blame, indicating that heightened perceived danger toward male addicts leads to greater blame. These findings highlight the role of gender-based biases in shaping public attitudes toward drug addiction and underscore the need for multifaceted strategies to reduce stigma and discrimination.
