초록

This study aimed to provide a science historical interpretation of symmetry in ‘Theory of Evolution’ and to draw implications for Biology education. To accomplish our research goals, we first looked at symmetry as it is discussed in Physics and Earth Science. Centered on the Copernican Revolution, symmetry is ‘the physical equivalence of different situations or objects by mathematical transformations’. We applied this definition to Biology to interpret the context in which Darwin’s ‘Theory of Evolution’. Essentialist interpretations of the Biology assume species unchangeability, meaning that there are Biological differences between humans and other species. However, Darwin’s‘Theory of Evolution’ implies Biological equivalence between humans and other species. Thus, this symmetrical interpretation of ‘Theory of Evolution’ shows the possibility of teaching the history of Biology by considering symmetry as a unifying theme. Furthermore, symmetry can be considered as a unifying theme that enables interdisciplinary thinking between science and aesthetic in Biology education.
