초록
Hydroponics are considered a promising educational alternative to traditional plant cultivation, yet its use in Korean educational settings is rare. This study was conducted to develop a STEAM program for middle school students utilizing hydroponics and confirm its educational outcomes. The developed program has the following features: 1) Students integrate scientific understanding, technological design, and mathematical knowledge to grow plants through hydroponics. 2) Students can grow and manage plants on their own from sowing to harvesting within 5-6 weeks. 3) Teachers can easily prepare instructional materials and conduct the program. In a pilot application of the program, we observed positive changes in students' attitudes and career aspirations towards plants. Additionally, overall students' satisfaction towards the STEAM program was found to be at a favorable level. We propose that hydroponics serve as an effective STEAM education tool that can influence students' attitudes toward plants in a short period of time. The study is significant as it develops an easily implementable educational program using hydroponics and provides specific guidelines for its application.
