Abstract
This study aims at examining the root causes of suicidal bombing by investigating the crucial studies and relevant theories that are associated with suicidal violence. In recent years, suicide bombers have become much more prevalent in the world including muslim and non-muslim countries. However, very little empirical research bad been made regarding the psychology of suicide bombers in terms of their motivation. Suicidal violence can be explained by the five levels of analysis: (1) psychopathology factors, (2) economic factors, (3) cultural factors, (4) rational choice, (5) political repercussion. By applying the views of Hafez (2006) and Kruglanski (2009), the current study emphasizes the fact that underlying motivation for suicidal terrorism should be understood by integrating various perspectives of profiling, rationalist approach, culturalist approach, and structural approach. This article makes conclusions that the motivations of suicidal bombers are not limited to a single cause in terms of theoretical backgrounds. It is necessary for researchers to conduct additional studies by conducting psychological autopsy and depths interviews toward relatives and friends of suicidal bombers in order to reconstructure their lives that were related to desire for revenge and religious inspiration. Moreover, it is important for researchers to consider the levels of situational factors and opportunity-related variables that may facilitate or hinder suicidal bombing. Further policy implications will be discussed.
