Abstract

Almost every part in Korean society has been rapidly changed into the new form since the modernization and industrialization in Korea accelerated from 1960's. This social phenomenon led to the rural collapse, as the workforce was shrinking in rural areas. The rural communities have faced on the problems, such as the decrease in population, the increase of an aging population, and so on, while people in rural areas begun to move into the urban areas. These aspects caused the rural areas to be exposed very easily to many various crimes, radically declining the crime prevention and its capability. Some factors influencing the crime occurrence in rural areas could be analyzed as follows. (1) the local isolation of rural household, (2) the population growth, (3) the citification's degree, (4) Age and gender composition, (5) economic situation in the rural areas and the surrounding areas, (6) the rate of movements in population, (7) the characteristics in education, leisure, community, religion, (8) the organizations in relation to investigation, (9) the activities of police, (10) the association between police force and community, (11) civil activities about the prevention and regulation of crime. It is necessary to find a way of associating the local communities in order to prevent some crimes related the farm on the basis of certain theories, such as life-style theory, routine activity theory and rational choice theory. In order to make it possible to do so, it is urgent to fill some vacancies on the police forces above all and seek some effective way to arrange them. Secondly, it makes sure that any organization related with police forces could function actually. Thirdly, local governments must support financially to install the electronic security systems. Lastly, it is important to change people's recognitions about the crimes in the rural communities. This study focuses on the area of Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do, considering the above factors and comparing some cases and others.
