Abstract

This research applies linguistic profiling techniques, rooted in forensic linguistics, to the analysis of both textual and conversational data from real-world criminal investigations. Traditional criminal/offender profiling has largely centered on psycholo gical approaches, often neglecting the linguistic aspects of communication. In contrast, this exploratory study foregrounds the contextual dynamics of language use in investi gative settings. The research focuses upon analyzing suspects’ statements, confronta tional interrogations, and video-recorded testimonies involving a primary suspect and an alleged accomplice. These materials (data) then are examined through the lens of high-context and low-context communication frameworks, aiming to uncover salient linguistic patterns with relevance to forensic inquiry and evidentiary interpretation. As a result, three key linguistic features were identified in the statements of the suspect and the accomplice. First of all, discourse markers served as indicators of potential deception or inconsistency. For example, in suspect A’s initial testimony compared to later statements following the admission of conspiracy, the repeated use of the discourse marker “just”(그냥) functioned to reveal previously withheld informa tion. Secondly, during the confrontational interrogation, suspect A [who eventually confessed] tended to use high-context expressions, whereas accomplice B [who main tained denial] responded with low-context, explicit language. This contrast corresponds with established linguistic patterns observed in prior research, demonstrating how these dynamics can be meaningfully applied in actual investigative contexts. Lastly, suspect A employed a specific temporal cue to distinguish the period before and after the alleged conspiracy, using it as a means to defend himself and minimize culpability. Similarly, alleged accomplice B utilized the same temporal reference as a strategic tool to assert non- involvement in the offense. This parallel use of linguistic cues by both individuals illustrates what Komter(2002) identifies as the “dissociation” strategy, wherein speakers [suspects] attempt to distance themselves from incriminating events. The findings, thus, offer concrete empirical evidence of how such a dissociative tactic is linguistically manifested in real-world criminal interrogation settings.
