Abstract
Today, the police actively encourage the cooperation of local members, that is, informal control. This is because it is not only impractical for the police to protect all local members, but also because citizens' activities are more effective than police in solving some social problems. A representative form of such informal control is collective efficacy. Collective efficacy refers to the willingness of local members to solve local problems based on mutual trust. In other words, collective efficacy regards social ties as a condition of informal control. Meanwhile, community policing invites local members in the process of establishing security and induce local members to pursue common goals. In other words, community policing attempt to restore the community. Therefore, in previous studies, the probabilistic cause and effect of community policing and collective efficacy were assumed. On the other hand, collective efficacy was judged as an intention of action in that it caused the actual action of problem solving. Although behavioral intentions depend on individual emotional attitudes, previous studies showed a direct link between community policing and collective efficacy. In other words, the emotion-dependent nature of collective efficacy was neglected. Therefore, in this study, a mediating model was designed by adding an emotional variable called place attachment between community policing and collective efficacy, and then a three-step regression analysis and Sobel test were performed. As a result of the analysis, the partial mediating effect of place attachment was confirmed. Based on this, a police program was proposed to induce the nature of collective efficacy and regional attachment.
