강점관점 사례관리의 특성에 관한 연구: 빈곤여성가구주의 참여경험을 중심으로

초록

본 연구에서는 심도 있는 면접에 기초한 질적 연구를 통해 빈곤여성가구주들이 경험한 강점관점 사례관리의 특성에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 즉 강점관점 사례관리에 참여한 12명의 빈곤여성가구주들이 어떤 경험을 하였는지, 즉 사례관리자들은 그들과 어떤 자세로 일을 했고, 구체적으로 어떤 방법을 통해 어떤 도움을 제공했는지 그들의 이야기를 통해 직접 밝혀내고자 하였다.본 연구에서는 세 가지의 주제가 도출되었는데 첫째는 강점관점 사례관리자의 특성, 두 번째는 강점관점 사례관리의 원리, 그리고 세 번째는 강점관점 사례관리의 방법에 관한 것이었다. 연구결과 빈곤여성가구주에게 강점관점 사례관리자는 친동기와 같이 따듯하고도 편안한 인간적인 만남을 제공하였고, 어떤 어려움도 함께 나눌 수 있는 마음의 안식처와 든든한 버팀목과 같은 존재로 인식되었다. 그들이 지각한 강점관점 사례관리의 실천원리는 각자가 처한 독특한 상황과 사정들을 고려한 일대일 맞춤 서비스를 제공하고, 어떠한 이야기라도 수용하고 인정해주며, 스스로 결정할 수 있도록 기다려 줄 뿐만 아니라 결정한 의견을 존중해 주고, 자신을 문제해결 과정의 동반자로서 인식하고, 인격적인 존재로 존중해 준 것이었다. 그리고 서비스의 수혜자로서 자신들의 변화에 도움이 된다고 인식한 강점관점 사례관리의 구체적인 방법은 스스로 방법을 찾아 해결하고, 홀로 설 수 있도록 기회를 제공하고, 열심히 사는 모습을 지지하고 인정함으로써 자신이 갖고 있는 힘과 능력을 발견하게 돕고, 필요한 정보를 공유함으로써 문제해결의 안내자와 조력자의 역할을 수행하고, 지속적인 관심을 보여주며, 포괄적인 서비스를 신속하고도 탄력적으로 제공함으로써 삶의 희망과 의지를 갖게 해 준 것으로 나타났다.강점관점 사례관리를 경험한 빈곤여성가구주의 이야기를 통해 나타난 이러한 연구결과는 선행연구를 통해 제시되고 있는 강점관점 사례관리의 특성, 즉 사례관리자와 클라이언트간의 관계, 실천원칙 및 방법들과 놀랍게도 일치하고 있다. 이는 강점관점 실천이나 사례관리는 원조 전문직 실천의 지침이 되는 인간의 존엄성에 대한 존중, 모든 인간의 강점과 능력에 대한 믿음, 클라이언트의 자기결정권에 대한 존중과 같은 가치와 철학을 그래도 실현시키고 있음을 보여주고 있어 이 실천방법이 현장에서 하루 빨리 정착되고 보다 널리 보급되어야 할 필요성을 입증해 주고 있다.

Abstract

This qualitative research project used in-depth interviews to explore the perceptions of poor single mothers regarding strength-based case management. Three major themes emerged from the personal stories: a) characteristics of strength-based case managers, b) principles of strength-based case management, and c) methods used in strength-based case management. Participants found the case managers to be warm and respectful, and they felt able to turn to them for support. They found the services to be individualized, collaborative, and respectful of self-determination. And they found it helpful when case managers supported and guided them in helping themselves; complimented them; and provided comprehensive services in a speedy and flexible manner. These results correspond closely with the current literature, suggesting that strength-based case management honors human dignity, the strength and capabilities of people, and the self-determination of clients. The author recommends that the field widely adopt strength-based case management methods.
