Abstract
Twentieth-century industrialization and functionalist modernism valued efficiency and rationality, defining design as the “visualization of function.” Yet such standardized artifacts reduced the potential for subjective experience and identity expression, disrupting the existential bond between humans and objects. This study proposes the concept of “Reconstruction of Being” in design, reinterpreting human–object relations through Heidegger’s ontology and structuralist– poststructuralist philosophy. Based on Lévi-Strauss’s notion of the “structuring of meaning” and the fluidity of meaning in Derrida, Foucault, and Deleuze, design is defined as a relational and practical act that generates new meanings beyond function. Analyzing the works of Droog Design, Nendo, and Studio Drift, the study explores how contemporary designers deconstruct functionalist aesthetics to expand identity expression. Ultimately, it suggests that “Reconstruction of Being Design” serves as a philosophical practice reconnecting human existence with the world and as a path for ontological reflection and identity recovery in contemporary design.
