Abstract

In recent years, major economies have competitively announced hydrogen roadmaps, shifting the energy paradigm towards hydrogen to reach carbon neutrality targets. However, the hydrogen economy will not materialize only with efforts by individual countries, which means that it calls for multilateral and bilateral cooperation. The United States is taking a balanced approach between the production of blue and green hydrogen and the consumption of hydrogen for mobility and power generation. In contrast, the Republic of Korea has been pushing the hydrogen economy with a nationwide effort of active participation in the private sector, focusing on fuel cell technology for power generation and mobility. Interviews with experts in the Republic of Korea outlined three potential areas of cooperation with the United States: i) Supply side of the hydrogen economy (production, storage, and delivery), small modular reactor (SMR)-based hydrogen production in particular; ii) Demand side of hydrogen economy (power generation, mobility and fuel cell use); iii) Standardization and certification of hydrogen and fuel cells.
