Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to develop e-learning design strategies on vicarious interactions in e-learning environments to facilitate passive participant's learning. Method: In order to achieve the objectives, we selected 12 cases where vicarious interactions were observed in the e-learning courses. We analyzed course analysis observation journals, instructor interviews, and lecture scripts for each case. We derived e-learning design strategies for vicarious interactions from the individual cases analysis and the cross-case analysis by synthesizing the characteristics of each case and the key strategies of practitioners. Results: As a design strategy regarding e-learning design elements, 15 detailed strategies were developed in four areas: "learning tasks", "direct learner selection", "dialogue script setting", and "shooting method". And as a design strategy according to the instructional purposes, three areas of "empathy induction", "modelling", and "explanation of concepts" and six detailed strategies were developed. Conclusion: The e-learning design strategies for vicarious interactions derived from this study could offer practical guidelines to support passive e-learning participants. In addition, the abundant case descriptions from the research results will help instructors and instruction designers better understand vicarious interactions in an e-learning environment.
