Abstract

This article first examines the historical background of the alternative schools in Korean modern society. It includes the references of the alternative schools' ideological backgrounds and educational institutional changes. Also, through the purpose of establishing the alternative school and the curriculum, it is attempting typology of them. In addition, the background and type of Christian alternative schools are presented, and their examples are provided. Finally, the prospects and challenges of the alternative schools, and the conclusions are presented. In the end, there are the diverse schools and even Christian alternative schools that advocated alternative education, and each school started to show that it started with the desperate need to overcome the limitations of public education and create a new education field. It is also the content of this article that reveals the actual achievements of overcoming the practical problems and barriers. Overall, the following conclusions are made. First, Christian alternative schools are leading the alternative school movement. Second, they showed that education is possible in a private field. Third, the various alternative schools have proposed the various models for the alternatives. Fourth, through self-directed learning, students are growing democratic consciousness in Christian alternative schools. Lastly, their teachers' devotion has made a positive educational effect.
