Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of religion on marriage intention and expected marriage age. In particular, the analysis model was constructed by applying the “particularized theology hypothesis,” the “characteristics hypothesis,” and the “interaction hypothesis” of Goldscheider (1971), which explain the relationship between religion and childbirth. To this end, the analysis results were derived using the binomial logistic model and logged multi-linear regression analysis based on the 2018 data of the <Korean General Social Survey>. Summarizing the analysis results, religion can be interpreted as an “interaction hypothesis,” but religion does not have a significant effect on the age of expected marriage. In other words, it was found that the high degree of faith of Protestant believers impacted the intention to marry, but the low degree of faith of Catholic believers rather increased the age of marriage hope. However, these results may be due to, first, the number of low samples used in this study. Second, limitations may be present in explaining the marriage phenomenon in modern society, as Goldscheider’s hypothesis is related to childbirth. Finally, this hypothesis was established in 1970. Nevertheless, the statistical significance of socio-demographic and economic variables that affect the intention to marry and the expected age demonstrates that the results in the relationship between religion and marriage are sufficiently acceptable.
