Abstract

Modern urban environments are designed based on functional and visual order, primarily emphasizing clarity, efficiency, and systematic aesthetics. However, in real cityscapes, unintended surface traces—such as cracks, discolorations, erosion, and residual marks—are constantly generated through time, environmental conditions, and unconscious human interactions. Although unplanned and often neglected, these visual residues evoke affective reactions among urban residents. This study conceptualizes such stimuli as “Unofficial Perception,” referring to unconscious visual elements on urban surfaces that function as emotional triggers despite lacking formal design intent. Focusing on four districts in Ulsan, South Korea, the research collected photographic data of surface traces and classified them into six formative elements: line, dot, plane, texture, color, and rhythm. Through expert consultation and qualitative analysis, emotional keywords such as calmness, anxiety, decay, submersion, vitality, and tension were extracted. A visual experiment was conducted using drawing and pattern reinterpretations of these traces. Participants evaluated emotional responses using Likert scales and keyword mapping. The results demonstrated consistent correlations between specific formative elements and emotional reactions—especially texture, color, and rhythm showed strong affective inducement. Unlike public design cases that focus on finished visual outcomes, this study emphasizes emotional induction structured by perceptual triggers. The findings validate the potential of urban traces as emotional visual language and propose their use in affective public communication strategies and design. Moreover, the research offers a theoretical framework integrating perceptual psychology, emotional design, and urban aesthetics to support the reinterpretation of unconscious urban layers.
