Abstract
This study aims to empirically examine how social media characteristics influence user commitment and addiction, and to compare the perspectives of consumers and sellers in order to derive both theoretical and practical implications. As social media has evolved from an information-sharing tool into an emotionally engaging platform, the concept of user commitment has become central to understanding consumer behavior. However, excessive commitment may lead to compulsive or addictive use, raising concerns about its negative consequences. To address this issue, the present study distinguishes between affective commitment and calculative commitment, and investigates how each type of commitment affects social media addiction. A dual-study design was adopted, involving Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) analysis for the seller perspective and a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach based on survey data for the consumer perspective. The AHP results show that sellers perceive affective commitment as more influential in driving addiction, and emphasize interactivity and content attractiveness as key contributing factors. From the consumer perspective, empirical findings reveal that interactivity and content attractiveness significantly enhance affective commitment, which in turn strongly predicts social media addiction. In contrast, calculative commitment was influenced primarily by functionality but showed a relatively weaker association with addiction. These findings highlight the psychological pathways through which social media characteristics drive user addiction and emphasize the need for careful management of affective engagement in platform and content design. By offering a dual-perspective framework, this study contributes to the literature on digital consumer behavior and provides strategic insights for managing user experience in a balanced and responsible manner. This research serves as a foundational step toward a more nuanced understanding of commitment and addiction in social media environments.
