YOLO(You Only Look Once)

Abstract

Every year, a large number of traffic accidents cause not only loss of life and property, but also enormous social and economic costs related to accident handling and insurance claim payments. In particular, the process of determining fault ratios after an accident is complex and time-consuming. When disputes arise between the parties involved, cases may be referred to dispute resolution committees or lead to prolonged legal proceedings, further increasing administrative and economic burdens. To address these issues, this paper presents a system that integrates YOLO (You Only Look Once), known for its real-time object detection and tracking capabilities, with a Liquid Neural Network (LNN), which is effective in modeling irregular and continuous time-series data. A large-scale open dataset is used for model training and performance evaluation. The proposed system achieves approximately 6% higher accuracy than the previous study in classifying the three major accident types commonly investigated in the earlier work (lane-change accidents, rear-end collisions, and wrong-way driving). Furthermore, the system expands the classification targets to six high-frequency accident types (i.e., lane-change accidents, rear-end collisions, uncontrolled-intersection collisions, signalized-intersection collisions, parking-lot collisions, and wrong-way driving) and achieves an accuracy of 89%, demonstrating its scalability in terms of the number of categories. Finally, experimental results confirm that the proposed automatic accident-type classification system provides a powerful framework for vehicle dashcam video analysis, with potential contributions to automating fault-ratio assessment and reducing dispute-resolution costs for insurance companies.
