Purpose: This study was conducted to generate a grounded substantive theory of the ego-integration experienceof the elderly who had children with mental disorder. Methods: Eight elders with children who had received a medicaltreatment of psychosocial rehabilitation therapy either at the community mental health center or day hospitalswere interviewed. Data were collected by in-depth interviews and were analyzed by the grounded theory Results:Sixteen categories with 47 sub-categories extracted from 227 concepts. The identified phenomenon was 'hopelessnesswhich the sky fell down' and the core category was 'embracing their mental illness children by heart'.The 16 categories were grounded into 6 stages for the ego-integration process; recognizing the problem, wandering,trying to overcome the problem, taking a rest, preparing for the future of their children, accepting and livingwith the problem. Conclusion: This results indicate that elders having children with mental disorder are ego-integrationprocess is developed. Health professionals need to develop nursing intervention to assist this processof the elders having children with mental disorder.
