Abstract
This research aimed at paying attention to the fact that Wolgan Yi Jeon‧Changseok Yi Jun brothers, who emerged as the representative native power, progressing a lively activity around the Japanese invasions of Korea period, leading the construction of Jonaewon immediately after the war, and investigating how their idea and will were reflected on the foundation of Jonaewon. Also, this research investigated which kind of reality did Yi Jun and Yi Jeon witnessed and experienced during the war, considering the specialty of Jonaewon as a medical institute and publicly announced establishment of Jonaewon, and the effect of such direct experience on their thought and belief. Yi Jeon and Yi Jun brothers thoroughly underwent the 7 years’ war. During that period, the brothers were about to begin the public office life just after passing the state examination in their age 30s. However, the war that suddenly occurred drove the brothers to pain. Furthermore, since Sangju was a major invasion pathway of Japanese invaders, accordingly, direct damage was huge. They resisted against the Japanese invaders by gathering the refugees, however they lost their parents during that period. Also, they were almost killed by the Japanese invaders, experiencing the crisis of massacre of family. At the same time, Yi Jeon's first son and the second son were born, simultaneously, Yi Jun's second son was born, also, Yi Jun's wife, Seonsan Mun(善山文氏) passed away. The family's life collapsed in an instant due to the war. In such personal pain, Yi Jeon and Yi Jun began activity by organizing an righteous army to keep their loyalty to revenge their parents and the nation. Meanwhile, Yi Jun exerted efforts for the nation and the people outside the battle field, e.g. operating Dunjeon to relieve starving people, providing military supplies, etc. Those were the war disasters, such as moaning people suffering from starvation and disease, exhausted righteous army comrades and soldiers with endless war, that Wolgan Yi Jeon and Changseok Yi Jun brothers directly underwent and witnessed near and from a distance. The brothers paid attention to more realistic relief of people, witnessing the misery of moaning people due to distinct traces of disaster after the war as well as during the war. Particularly, the two brothers were more desperately concerned, since they saw and experienced the disaster of war directly while they were posted as the county head. As much as their thick brotherly affection, they encouraged each other frequently exchanging letters, which show their worry and deep concern about their reality as the county head based on Aemin spirit(love for the people). The origin of the name ‘Jonaewon’ is the love for the people, and Aemin spirit of Yi Jeon and Yi Jun became the drive of progressing the foundation. Yi Jeon and Yi Jun brothers experienced the severe war and devised various relief plans for the people in the reality where they suffered from pain, sharing that pain, by being appointed as the head in foreign counties. However, that were unequal to realize that wish. During the period where the realization of all the relief plans seemed unable even with government level public aic(公力), Yi Jeon and Yi Jun took the lead in foundation of a private medical institute, Jonaewon, gathering efforts with the regional native people. Since such efforts were melted therein, Jonaewon could be said to be the symbolic icon of practice and completion of Aemin spirit.
