한말 영남지역 심설논쟁의 전개와 쟁점

본 논문은 한주 이진상의 문집인 『한주집』 발간을 둘러싸고 한말 성주와 안동지역 유림들 간에 벌어졌던 심설논쟁의 전개 과정과 학술적 배경을 검토한 논문이다. 1895년 『한주집』이 발간된 후 내용 가운데 일부가 이황의 학설을 왜곡하는 부분이 있다는 이유로 양측이 갈등하다가 문집이 불태워지는 사건이 있었다. 이 사건은 당시 영남 유림사회에 큰 충격을 몰고 왔지만 그 민감성으로 인해 지금까지 지역에서 발생한 하나의 해프닝 정도로 인식되고 학술적으로 정리하는 작업은 이루어지지 않았다. 논자가 이 문제를 다루고자 하는 것은 민감한 논란을 재연하자는 것이 아니라 적어도 그 사건이 일어날 수밖에 없는 타당한 근거가 있었는지를 학술적으로 정리할 필요는 있다고 보기 때문이다. 이를 위해 먼저 논쟁에 관련된 인사들의 사적 기록을 통해 논란의 전개 과정을 재구성했고 나아가 통문 등 관련 단체에서 생산한 공식기록을 통해 양측의 주장을 정리했으며, 마지막으로 문집 등 학술적 자료를 바탕으로 양측의 주장을 양본의 문제, 동정의 주체, 지각의 문제라는 관점에서 분석했다. 그 결과, 당시의 심설논쟁은 일정 부분 양측의 오해 내지는 개인적인 인간관계에 의한 측면도 있지만 근본적으로는 논란이 생길 수밖에 없는 양측의 학문적 입장 차이에 근거하고 있으며 나아가 그것은 송대 성리학의 본질적 속성과 관련되어 있다는 결론을 내릴 수 있었다.
Abstract
This paper examines the process and academic background of the controversy between the Confucian scholars of Andong and Seongju area over the collection of works by Lee Jin-sang in the late period of the Korea Empire. Although it was such a big event in the Confucian society that the Hanju’ works were burned down, until now, the issue has been recognized as a happening in the region and academic cleanup has not yet been carried out. For this purpose, I first reconstructed the controversial development process through personal records, including the diaries of the people involved in the dispute, and further summed up their arguments through official records produced by related organizations, including the official documents, and finally analyzed the arguments of both sides based on academic materials such as literary works. As a result, we were able to conclude that the controversy at the time was based on the academic differences between the two sides, although there were some misunderstandings or personal relationships between the two sides. Furthermore, it was also found to be related to the essential attributes of Neo-Confucianism.
