Abstract

To refine their culture and institutions, Koguryo, Bakje, Silla imported many books including ones on Confucianism from China. Among them quite a number of books seem to be on military strategy. This hypothesis is supported by my investigation of 『Samguksagi(三國史記)』. These books on military strategy seem to be wellknown among civilian as well as military officers, which was something to with the social trend emphasizing the ability to master both civilian and military skills. Among these Chinese materials are 『Sun Wu:The Art of War(孫子兵法)』, the so called best book on military strategy and part of 『Six treatises on stratagem(六韜)』. Along with imported books from China I also discovered materials written in Korea, such as 『An Guk on military strategy(安國兵法)』 and 『Hwa Reong Do(花鈴圖)』 related with a book on military strategy of 15 volumes. These books were widely utilized in battles and wars in practice. Good examples are Admiral Eul Ji Moon Duk(乙支文德) who won a great victory in Signal victory of Sal Soo(薩水大捷) and Admiral Kim Yoo Sin(金庾信) who was very good at utilizing espionage and intelligence war. In particular 『Sun Wu:The Art of War(孫子兵法)』 was substantially utilized among three countries which did not simply follow what was written in the book but also made adjustment to accommodate their own situations, however. In this context, I think that a concrete and whole information of books on military strategy will be revealed through a close examination and research on tactics and strategies used in the number of battles and wars among three countries.
