Abstract

Bangsan Heo Hoon is a representative literary and scholar of Korean Empire period youngnam area. He was influenced by both the studies of youngnam area and the metropolitan area Namin, but showed more hardness to the studies of the metropolitan area Namin than the youngnam area. However, it is difficult to exclude the influence of youngnam area studies from him. It is because both the studies of youngnam area and metropolitan area Namin are based on Toegyehak, and all the theories he claims are faithful to Toegye’s theory. In this regard, the study of the metropolitan area Namin, which he noted, is more about interpretation, application and application than the different of the study of youngnam area. In literature, Heo Hoon regarded literature with a combination of morality and sentences as the best literature and put literature around morality, but he defended the independence of literature by affirming the value of literature and saying that it is not possible to create outstanding literature only by moral cultivation. In this regard, Heo Hoon’s literary perception is essentially on the same axis as the conservative and traditional literary view, but it has progressed in the direction of affirming the independent value of literature in the traditional literary view. However, it is not easy to expand such progress to the pursuit of originality or the recognition of independent value of literature. It is clear that his literary perception moved one step toward the recognition of individuality, but that individuality had to be within the allowable domain of the model. In this regard, it is clear that Heo Hoon negatively saw the poetry tied to the model’s framework, but it is hard to say that he affirmed the poetry that ignored the model’s framework or beyond the model framework. Therefore, his literary perception is conservative and traditional in terms of essence. However, Heo Hoon’s literary perception was the result of reviewing the literature theory that was popular in the youngnam area at the time and accepting the change of the times while keeping the roots of tradition. Therefore, Heo Hoon’s literary awareness is to show the consciousness of intellectuals who tried to overcome the gap between ideal and reality of the time by covering the youngnam area and the metropolitan area and including tradition and change, and it means that it can analogize the literature of the coming age.
