본 논문은 고전소설 69편에 나타난 선룡의 유형과 상징적 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 선룡은 대표적인 행동 양상에 따라 네 가지로 유형 분류할 수 있다. 첫 번째 ‘목숨 구출형’은 인간의 목숨에 직간접적으로 관여하는 유형이다. 두 번째 ‘도움 요청형’은 주인공에게 도와달라고 부탁하는 유형이다. 세 번째 ‘국가 유공형’은 주인공을 도움으로써 국가에 공을 세우는 유형이다. 네 번째 ‘혼인 매개형’은 남녀 주인공의 혼인을 이어주는 유형이다. 선룡의 상징적 의미도 네 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 선룡은 하늘의 바른 도리를 대변하는 존재이다. 둘째, 선룡은 악룡과 달리 인간에게 존중받는 존재이다. 셋째, 선룡은 인간과 친근한 동반자적 존재이다. 넷째, 선룡은 인간을 보조하는 역할을 수행하기 위해 창조된 존재이다. 한국 고전소설에는 선룡의 신성성이 약화되는 모습 및 선룡과 악룡이 혼재하는 양상이 나타난다. 이는 요괴의 양면적 속성이 서로 배척하고 수용하면서 혼합의 결과로 나아가는 독특한 요괴관을 보여주는 것이다.
Abstract
This study explores the different types and symbolic meanings of benevolent dragons found in 69 classical novels. Based on their key behavioral patterns, benevolent dragons can be categorized into four types: The first type, “life-saving, ” involves dragons that directly or indirectly intervene to save human lives. The second type, “seeking help, ” refers to dragons that request assistance from the protagonist. The third type, “national service, ” supports the protagonist in contributing to the nation’s well-being. The fourth type, “marriage facilitator, ” helps bring male and female protagonists together in marriage. The symbolic significance of benevolent dragons can also be divided into four key aspects: First, they embody the righteous principles of the heavens. Second, unlike malevolent dragons, they are revered by humans. Third, they are depicted as friendly companions to humans. Fourth, they exist to support and assist humans in various ways. In Korean classical novels, the divine nature of benevolent dragons tends to weaken, and they often coexist with evil dragons. This reflects a unique perception of supernatural beings, where the contrasting traits of benevolence and malevolence interact, leading to a blend of both characteristics.
