Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the alcohol culture of Yeongnam Confucian scholars of the time through the Diary of Choseongdang, written by Kim Taek-ryong (1547-1627), of the Uiseong Kim clan from Yean, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The Diary of Choseongdang consists of three volumes: Volume 1 was written in 1612 (when the author was 66 years old), Volume 2 in 1616 (70 years old), and Volume 3 in 1617. However, parts of the 1612 diary are missing; it begins mid-entry on January 5 and is missing content after mid-entry on July 25. The total number of surviving diary entries from 1612 is 198 days. For 1616, the entries run from January 1 to December 23, but content after the middle of the December 24 entry did not survive, leaving 347 days in total. For 1617, the diary starts from the middle of the entry on January 25, and parts after December 19 of that year are also missing. As a result, there are 318 surviving entries for 1617. The diary is recorded in a free style without any special format or rules, capturing everyday life. At the time he wrote the diary, KimTaek-ryong had retired from office and was living in his hometown. Accordingly, most of the diary entries concern matters such as household affairs, farming, and the management of servants. One of the most prominent features, however, is his social interactions. Almost every day, either guests would visit Kim’s home or he would visit acquaintances, local schools (hyanggyo), or Confucian academies (seowon). Many of these visits involved drinking, mainly during holidays such as the New Year and Jeongwol Daeboreum (the first full moon of the lunar year), when friends and acquaintances called on him, while carrying out duties at Confucian academies, or on birthdays and other gatherings. According to the diary, out of the 198 recorded days in 1612, Kim Taek-ryong drank alcohol on 58 days; in 1616, he drank on 95 out of 347 days; and in 1617, on 72 out of 318 days. This amounts to 225 drinking days out of the total 863 days covered by the diary, which is roughly one day of drinking for every three days on average. An interesting point is that, of these 225 days, only five were spent drinking alone. On one of those days, he had a morning-after drink (haejang sul), on two days he consumed alcohol akin to medicinal wine to recover from physical fatigue, and on the remaining two days, he drank to assuage his melancholy. Consequently, excluding the five days he drank alone, on 220 days he shared alcoholic beverages with others. These companions ranged from family and relatives to friends and acquaintances—people with whom he already had some familiarity. From this, we can infer that Kim Taek-ryong’s consumption of alcohol went beyond mere drinking; it served as a means of interaction and communication. Through drinking gatherings, he strengthened harmony and unity among family and relatives, while furthering friendship and fellowship with friends and acquaintances. In this regard, alcohol functioned as an important medium for social bonding, and drinking occasions mediated by alcohol likely served as opportunities to build mutual trust and closeness.
