Abstract
This paper deals with the history of interchange and cooperation in East Asia. The reason for the historical approach is two-fold: Firstly, a sufficient understanding of the history of the relations will make an outlook for the future development meaningful. In this regard, a special attention is to paid to the discussion on the chance of regional cooperation in East Asia which seems increasingly important; Secondly, the history of the relations in East Asia has been written around the so-called Northeast Asian countries - Korea, Japan, China. It will be argued that Southeast Asia should be incorporated in the discussion to get a proper picture. In this paper the formation and development of the ASEAN will be dealt specially. It is because the ASEAN is to be regarded as a model for the successful cooperation in East Asia.
