Abstract
This article examines the Tangping (躺平, “lying flat”) phenomenon through a comparative analysis of youth affective practices in mainland China and Taiwan. Rather than construing Tangping as a manifestation of apathy or withdrawal, the study situates it within broader processes of structural transformation and value reconfiguration under conditions of neoliberal restructuring, precarious labor, and the erosion of institutional familism. Treating youth not as passive subjects but as methodological vantage points for analyzing social change, the article explores how Tangping operates within distinct sociopolitical contexts. In China, it functions as a form of covert resistance to hyper-competition and labor exploitation, articulated through meme culture and affective organization. In Taiwan, by contrast, it appears as a depoliticized and individualized response shaped by post-growth sensibilities and the decline of familial and institutional supports. Drawing on Lauren Berlant’s notion of cruel optimism, Sara Ahmed’s theory of affective economies, and Ulrich Beck’s concept of individualization, the article contends that Tangping constitutes an affective practice through which youth renegotiate the conditions of life and envision alternative ethical orientations. In doing so, it recasts youth as active agents who critically reinterpret and reconfigure dominant national narratives in contemporary East Asia.
