Abstract
This article’s objective is to study perceptional power of women and men to see how women’s pictures and languages used in text reflect how women are seen. The study finds that women’s pictures clearly portrayed through magazine’s covers, calendars and goods presenters especially car presenters seen in several media are that women must be beautiful, have good shape, and wear make-up and beautiful attires. They may wear revealing clothes to reveal parts of their bodies such as bosoms, belly or thighs. This pattern is popular except for Thai magazine’s covers in the past. The attempt to present women’s bodies should attract the opposite gender’s attention. Although customers who may buy the goods are of both genders, the goods owners focus only on empowering men’s beholding power. Therefore, women are seen as goods rather than presenters of the goods themselves. Moreover, study of languages about ‘looking’ and ‘beholding’ used in the Thai novels finds that both male and female authors give beholding power to male characters to ‘take a look’ at female characters rather than the vice versa. Roles of the beholder and beheld are embedded with unequal gender power; women’s status as the ones who are beheld are second to men’s while gender power of men as the beholders is higher than women’s.
