Abstract
This study aims to explore Chinese consumers’ perception types toward virtual streamers emerging amidst the advancement of digital technology and the expansion of the live commerce market, using Q methodology. To this end, 35 Q samples were constructed, and Q-sorting was conducted with 24 P samples. The results classified participants’ perceptions into four types: “Pragmatic Technology Acknowledging Type”, “System Management Oriented Type”, “Rational Neutral Consumer Type”, and “Generational Culture Accepting Type”. Each type showed distinct differences in consumption tendency, trust basis, emotional responses, and appearance preferences, reflecting characteristics of a low-desire society and the digital native generation. Most types positively evaluated the 24-hour broadcasting capability of virtual streamers and the consistent storytelling between characters and products, while still valuing emotional communication and trust with real streamers. This study provides practical implications for MCN companies and marketers in developing tailored strategies and emphasizes the importance of cultural identity and trust elements in virtual streamer development. However, since the study was limited to a group with a specific age range and high digital familiarity, future research should conduct more segmented comparative analyses considering region, age, and digital usage habits, and explore multilayered factors affecting consumer perceptions.
