Noddings는 대화 자체를 배려를 위한 대화로 이해하고 있다. 배려를 위한 대화는 상대방의 성장을 촉진하는 차원에서의 대화라는 의미이다. 본고에서는 Noddings가 밝힌 대화개념과 세 가지 대화유형인 형식적 대화․영원한 대화․일상적 대화를 중심으로 대화의 지적․정서적․도덕적 측면에서의 교육적 의미를 분석․고찰했다. Noddings의 대화론에 나타난 교육적 의미를 명료화하기 위해서 Buber, Burbules, Gadamer, Freire, Habermas, Hutchins, Socrates 등의 입장과 관련지어 논의했다. Noddings를 비롯한 여러 학자들의 대화개념은 적절하게 수렴하고 있지만, 대화유형은 차이가 많이 있었다. Noddings는 대화를 실제로 수행하는데 있어서 이성을 발휘하는 능력이 제대로 반영되기 어렵고, 판단에서 행위로 나아가는 것에 관심을 가져야 하며, Habermas의 능력이론을 딛고 일어서야 한다고 주장했다. 그녀에게는 Kohlberg의 딜레마가 도덕교육의 전부는 아니었다. Noddings가 제시한 교실에서 이루어지는 세 가지 대화유형은 따로 떨어진 별개의 것이 아니며 서로 연결되고 만나는 개념이다. Noddings의 3가지 대화유형은 Burbules는 물론 Buber, Gadamer, Freire 등의 대화형태에 관한 견해들을 포괄하면서 지적․정서적 측면을 함께 고려한 절충적 개념이다. 대화와 관련된 많은 연구들에서는 정서적 결합과 인격적 특성을 증진하는 일상적 대화의 중요성에 대해 별로 다루지 않았다. Noddings는 성인과 아동의 일상적인 대화가 도덕교육의 핵심이라고 주장했다. 또한 그녀에게는 생활 속에서 나타나는 여담이 일상적 대화의 모범이다. 그녀에게서 일상적 대화는 가장 타인의 성장을 촉진하는 배려를 위한 대화이다. 수용․확언․포섭 등을 통해서 관계성을 증진하는 진실한 대화가 바로 Noddings의 일상적 대화이다. Noddings, Burbules, Buber는 진실한 대화를 가능하게 하는 요소로 정서적 관계성을 들었다. Noddings의 일상적 대화는 인격적 성장을 추구하는 진실한 대화, 개방적인 열린 대화이고, 포괄적․발산적인 대화임을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
It is important today for teachers to participate in conversations with their students because conversations for caring seem to have diminished. Conversations reveal care, promote trust, and invite remembrance. Noddings tried to show how stories can be used in conversations. The stories provide starting points for conversation, and conversations provide the setting in which stories emerge. Formal conversation, immortal conversation, and ordinary conversation are essential to moral life. They are part of moral education when they are properly conducted. Three forms of conversation that Noddings stresses and accents are likely to increase engagement, enhance cultural literacy, and contribute to the construction of relations of care and trust. The three types of conversation that Noddings asserts are not discrete. Formal conversation has the serious, rule-bound conversation characteristic of philosophy. Even preparation for formal conversation is widely neglected. Immortal conversation has many other topics. It is possible to introduce discussion of the good life through that. Ordinary conversation is distinguished by the great existential questions. Ordinary conversations in classrooms are important in themselves. Their ocurrence in a rich learning environment is a sign that relationships of care and trust are being established. Through conversations Students get to reveal something of themselves, and teachers become real persons and people learn how to meet and treat one another. Guidance of sensitive and well-prepared teacher is the important factor that stories and conversations have the potential to contribute significantly to moral life and education.
